Keeping your carpet clean can be a tedious task, especially when you must use toxic chemicals for cleaning. It’s no fun to have to bring out the plastic gloves and breathing mask just to do some cleaning in your own home. I have good news for you though; you don’t have to use chemicals anymore! Here are some natural, non-toxic options for cleaning your carpet that will be easier on you, your kids, your pets, your wallet and your carpet.
Natural Cleaning Solutions
These days you can go to your local home and garden store and find natural alternatives to harsh chemical carpet cleaners. They will be pre-mixed and often be heavily concentrated. By using a concentrated cleaning agent, you can save money as well, as you can dilute the solution according to your specific needs. This also cuts down on the packaging needed, making it an especially eco-friendly option. These natural cleaning solutions will often contain a form of baking soda, as well other non-toxic and biodegradable ingredients.
At home, you can find some excellent and incredibly effective cleaning options right under your sink, in your cupboards or in your medicine cabinet. Things like baking soda, vinegar, salt and club soda can be used to mix up a cleaning solution or for spot cleaning your carpet.
Non-Toxic Stain Removal
In the past, chemicals were most often used to get rid of pesky stains, but these options are not always very eco-friendly. Instead, make your own spot stain removal solution by mixing water with baking soda into a paste. Spread it over the stain and let it sit for at least a half hour. Baking soda is a natural stain remover and odor neutralizer. For an effective natural carpet cleaner for your whole carpet, mix 1 part white vinegar with one part water. Spray over the area you want to clean. Use a brush or towel to gently scrub the area and then dab with a dry towel to remove the excess moisture and let dry.
In years past, you used to have to call a company to come and steam clean your carpets. Not anymore! Nowadays, you can buy a personal steam cleaning machine to clean your carpet just like the pros. These days, they are as handy as a vacuum cleaner. Steam cleaning uses the power of hot water to clean your carpets, making it super eco-friendly and non-toxic.
Replace harsh chemical fragrances with organic essential oils. These oils are extremely cheap considering their concentrated nature. You can find a bottle of orange or lemon oil at inexpensive prices. Since you won’t need to use but a few drops at a time, one bottle can last you for months or years, depending on how much carpet you have. Another option is to mix up your own carpet freshener by adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil to a spray bottle full of pure water. Use a fine mister option to spray the carpet before people come over and enjoy the wonderful smell of fruit or flowers from your essential oils.
Baking soda is a fantastic odor controller. Place some baking soda on a plate and leave in the middle of your carpet before people come over. The baking soda will neutralize any odors in that room. Another option for odor control is to use an air purifier. An air purifier will be running all the time and will naturally and silently extract odors from the carpet and the room.
